It is that time of year again, when men from all over the world will unite for a ‘tasche’ growing marathon in aid of male-related health issues such as prostate cancer. From November 1, it is officially Movember!
Challenging men to grow, and women to support, the Mo (moustache) for the month of November, Movember’s aim is to raise awareness and funds for men’s health, in particular prostate and testicular cancer initiatives worldwide.
Once registered to take part in the ‘mo-vement’, from the beginning of November all clean shaven men will throw away their razors and grow a moustache for 30 days.
Last year, thousands of men internationally participated in Movember, including a local group of Algarve residents, who together raised nearly €800 for the cause.
During the annual event, the men taking part, also known as ‘Mo Bros’, will be seeking sponsors to support their aims of raising money, which will be used in a global effort with donations to charities such as the Prostate Cancer Charity and the Institute of Cancer Research, in addition to other closely related charities that support the one in six men who will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.
Supported by the women in their lives, ‘Mo Sistas’ will offer encouragement and assistance to their men, in seeking out sponsorship, acting as team captains, recruiting others to join and sparking conversations about the event.
The Algarve Resident would like to hear the stories behind any readers participating in Movember this year.
