Remembering the fallen

Annually a Poppy Appeal takes place to honour those soldiers who lost their lives at war, and this year an appeal by the Royal British Legion (RBL) will run from October 26 until November 11.

The main Remembrance Service in the Algarve will start at 10.50am on November 11 at St. Luke’s Church in Palhagueira, where wreaths will be laid by the British Ambassador to Portugal, Jill Gallard, and members of the RBL. There will also be a Remembrance Service at the Praia da Luz Church at 12pm.

The RBL Poppy Appeal coordinator for Portugal, Sandra Wilkinson, said: “At Remembrance, the British Community throughout the world remember those who died for the freedom that we enjoy today, and the visible representation of that Remembrance is the wearing of a Poppy and the keeping of the two minute silence at 11am on November 11.”

The RBL is the UK’s leading Armed Forces charity, which provides practical, emotional and financial support to all members of the British Armed Forces past and present, and their families. The Royal British Legion actively campaigns to improve their lives and safeguard the Military Covenant between the nation and its Armed Forces. An annual commemoration tradition, which is upheld in the United Kingdom, Portugal and in 95 other countries overseas is organised by the RBL, in addition to organising the Poppy Appeal.

Throughout Portugal poppies are being distributed and the list of locations can be found on the website www.britishlegion.org.uk/branches/portugal, by selecting ‘Poppy Appeal’.

“More helpers are always needed, particularly in the extreme East and West Algarve,” concluded Sandra.
