“Stay hydrated, informed and cool”, Portugal’s health authorities say
As temperatures start to soar past 35ºC in parts of the country, Portugal’s health authorities are urging the public to take precautions to stay safe during the heatwave.
With several districts under yellow weather alert from Wednesday through Friday, the Directorate-General of Health (DGS) has issued a renewed call for caution, especially as the hottest hours of the day approach.
Here’s what the DGS recommends to stay safe from the heat:
- Stay hydrated – Drink water regularly, even if you’re not thirsty, and avoid alcohol
- Eat light and cool meals more frequently throughout the day
- Wear loose-fitting clothes that cover your skin, along with a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
- Spend at least two to three hours a day in cool places
- Avoid direct sun exposure, especially between 11am and 5pm
- Use sunscreen with SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 30 or higher and reapply every two hours.
- If working outdoors, don’t do it alone, as extreme heat can cause confusion or fainting.
- Keep an eye on vulnerable people, such as the elderly, young children, those with chronic illnesses, or limited mobility.
- Keep blinds or shutters closed during peak heat and ventilate your home as it cools down in the evening.
- Stay updated on weather conditions to adjust your plans as needed.
