Stricken cargo ship already under tow to Vigo

Eikborg should arrive in Spanish port early morning Friday

The complicated rescue of cargo ship “Eikborg” – which lost its rudder outside Figueira da Foz harbour earlier this week – has hopefully survived the worst (considering it went forwards during Storm Kristin), and is close at last to dry land.

The ship is expected to arrive in the Spanish Galician port of Vigo tomorrow morning around 8am-9am, national maritime authority spokesman Ricardo Sá Granja has told Lusa.

After the fairly outspoken comments of ports community vice-president Paulo Mariano, authorities appear to be playing this incident ‘very piano’ as the reason for the Eikborg’s rudder loss is investigated by government agencies.

The good news for the crew – which has weathered a miserable ordeal this week – is that they should be getting a break from the stress of the last few days very soon.
