Swinging 60s and 70s rock on!

Doctor Who made an appearance and Elvis was there too

Anita’s Swinging 60s Buffet Lunch, a recent event in aid of the Association for Protection of Animals Algarve (APAA), was a complete sell-out.

“We know our events attract a lot of attention,” Jenny, APAA president, is laughing. “There was a time-warp, definitely.” But it didn’t seem to bother any of the 45 guests enjoying themselves in the warmth of a May Sunday afternoon.

“No gatecrashers, but we are sure Doctor Who made an appearance. Elvis was there!” Karen won the best outfit prize.

The raffle alone raised €240, the Cake Bake Sale €280 and the event itself just over €600. “All the monies raised go towards our SNiP Sterilization Programme, cat colonies and care of abandoned animals.”

Team APAA are proud that their events are popular not only amongst members but non-members alike. “This helps the association attract new blood!” Meanwhile, in the background, there are still furry felines and canines at the heart of the matter. ‘Possy’, a small, sweet-tempered male ginger cat, is looking for a feline-friendly family. ‘Snow’ came home with a broken leg. Family distraught. Advised it would cost €900-€1000. Victoriya sought advice. Immediately, APAA supplied her with alternative veterinary contacts promising to reduce the cost.

APAA’s motto is ‘Here to Help’. “We are not always able to wave a magic wand!” Jenny explains. “But if there is anyone who needs advice on vets’ fees and care, we can certainly provide you with alternatives. Sometimes that second opinion counts.”

Helping families with cats’ fees involves a small check and ensuring that the animal will be sterilized and chipped. “We can then make a donation to the cat or dog’s treatment.”

Unfortunately, the current socio-economic climate does present its own problems. “We have callers who refuse to feed strays and do not wish to be involved at any level with the animal. Very often the animal is already malnourished and suffering. But they expect someone to turn up and put the problem right.”

On the other hand, there are kind hearts. “We asked the gardener of one area to not feed the cats for a day, so we could trap them. They are enticed by food! However, he still feeds the cats. So, it is a waiting game! I guess we’ll have to get him down to the local bar!”
