The September 2025 Night Sky

Welcome to the September night sky. This is the month of the Autumn Equinox in the northern hemisphere.

This year it happens on the 22nd and, on that date, the Sun will rise exactly in the east and set exactly in the west 12 hours later. The world will have equal night and day at this time.

The illusive planet Mercury is in conjunction with the Sun this month and not visible. The brilliant planet Venus is to be seen rising in the east three hours before the Sun and, on the 19th, the thin crescent Moon is close to this planet.

The red planet Mars is close to the Sun this month, so not easily visible. The gas giant planet Jupiter is a morning object, and, on the 16th, the last quarter Moon is close to this planet.

The ringed planet Saturn is at opposition on the 21st, in the constellation of Pisces. This constellation is to be found just below the Great Square of Pegasus, and it will be due south in the night sky at local midnight.

Close to Saturn is the faint planet Neptune that is at opposition on the 23rd. This planet needs a small telescope or binoculars to be seen. The near full Moon will be close to these two planets on the 8th. The barely visible gas planet Uranus is coming to opposition next month. It is currently in the constellation of Taurus and, when it is at opposition, it will rise in the east just after sunset.

There are two meteor showers this month – the Aurigids on the 1st with an origin point close to the bright star Capella and, on the 9th, the Epsilon-Perseids shower with a similar origin point.

The Moon is full on the 7th, and, at the time, there will be a total Lunar eclipse. From this country, it will happen at moonrise just after sunset. The blood red Moon will rise in eclipse over on the eastern horizon.

The Moon isfull on the 7th, last quarter on the 14th, new on the 21st and first quarter on September 30.
