What Portugal Googled most in 2025

From sports to politics, see what got Portuguese web surfers Googling this year

Google has revealed the topics that most captured the attention of internet users in Portugal this year.

According to the company’s “Year in Search 2025” report, released on Thursday, the FIFA Club World Cup – in which Portuguese football clubs SL Benfica and FC Porto participated over the summer – and the April power blackout were the most-searched general topics in the country.

The third and fourth most searched topics were political, with the results of October’s local elections and the 2025 legislative elections taking the third and fourth spot, respectively.

Pope Leo XVI – the successor of Pope Francis, who passed away in April – was the fifth most searched topic, ahead of the Glória funicular tragedy in which 16 people died.

Earthquakes accounted for the seventh most searched term on Google in 2025, followed by the tropical cyclone Gabrielle and Portugal’s civil protection coastal warnings in eighth and ninth.

Last in the top 10 most-searched topics is the hugely popular Labubu plush toy.

Google says its rankings are based on the aggregation of trillions of searches, analysed through Google Trends and internal data tools, with spam and repeated queries filtered out to better reflect “the spirit of 2025.”
