Wine Talk – A high-altitude surprise from Douro

With its garnet color, smooth tannins, minerality and red fruit flavors (berries, cherries and red plums), Quanta Terra Cota 600 could be mistaken for a Dão red. But don’t be fooled. This wine is from the Douro Valley, but from high altitude vineyards growing at 600 meters elevation (“cota”) in the Alijó Peninsula region.

This is a cooler microclimate that produces fresher fruit flavors and generally lighter wines than what you may have come to expect from red wines from the Douro Valley. A blend of Tinta Roriz (aka Aragonez or Tempranillo) and Tinta Amarela (aka Trincadeira), this wine aged in new 500-liter French oak barrels adding smokiness that reminds me of the roasting chestnuts wafting through plazas in Portugal this time of year.

Quanta Terra has a reputation for excellent quality wines, and notably won Producer of the Year and Winemaker of the Year awards in 2018 (Grandes Escolhas). Give this beautiful high-altitude red a try to elevate your next pizza night at home, or serve with grilled meats or roasted poultry dishes.

Find it at Intermarché for €18.50.
