World-famous Harlem Globetrotters start Portugal tour in Albufeira

The iconic exhibition basketball team will put on seven shows in Portugal

The Harlem Globetrotters, a world-famous American exhibition basketball team, will begin their Portugal tour in the Algarve town of Albufeira on Friday, May 30.

Sixteen years after their last visit to Albufeira, the Globetrotters are promising an unforgettable evening of athletic and humorous fun at the municipal sports pavilion.

Founded in 1926, the team has wowed nearly 150 million people across more than 120 countries with its choreographed games and gravity-defying moves.

Despite their longevity, this year’s show will see the Globetrotters introducing a few new twists, including the debut of a female player in the lineup.

Speaking at the official event launch on Thursday, Albufeira mayor José Carlos Rolo expressed pride in hosting “a very special event”, noting the importance of basketball to the town, which already hosts a massive youth basketball tournament – the Festa do Basquetebol Juvenil.

Deputy mayor Cristiano Cabrita expects a packed house, pointing to recent upgrades in local sports infrastructure as key to bringing world-class events like this to town.

Representing the show’s Portuguese organisers, Fun Addict, Carlos Barroca praised the municipality’s quick support and highlighted the Globetrotters’ role in “encouraging young people to embrace sports in a positive way.”

Tickets are already on sale via Ticketline, ranging from €25 to €50, with an optional Magic Pass for fans who want behind-the-scenes access and an up-close experience with the team.

The show starts at 7.30pm. The Globetrotters will then travel to Viseu for their next show on May 31, followed by Lisbon (June 1), Porto (June 2), Braga (June 3), Vila Nova de Gaia (June 4) and Évora (June 5) – tickets available here.
