Algarve to host Benfica-Sporting Supercup? “Nothing confirmed yet,” says Algarve football chief

The Supercup was last held in the Algarve in 2019

Could the Portuguese Supercup be making a return to the Algarve? That’s the big question after reports surfaced suggesting that Faro’s Estádio do Algarve may host the upcoming season’s curtain-raiser between Benfica and Sporting.

While national sports newspaper Record reports the match is set for the south, Albertino Galvão, president of the Algarve Football Association, told Renascença radio there’s nothing official yet.

“At the moment, we have nothing confirmed,” Galvão said. “If it is confirmed, it would be great news. It’s the beginning of August, many Portuguese are on holiday here, and it would be excellent.”

The Supertaça has been held at Estádio Municipal de Aveiro since 2020. The last time it was played elsewhere was in the Algarve in the 2019/20 season – coincidentally, a fiery clash between Benfica and Sporting which ended in a historic 5-0 win for Benfica.

Galvão added that the Algarve stadium is ready to host the Supercup.

“It’s a beautiful stadium, with solid infrastructure and good access, everything needed for a major match like Sporting vs Benfica,” he added. “Yes, we’re prepared.”
