João Simões, one of the many young footballers from the Algarve taking the football world by storm, has signed a long-term contract extension with Sporting CP.
The new deal links the 19-year-old midfielder to the Portuguese champions until 2030, now protected by a hefty €80 million release clause – proving just how much faith the club has in his abilities.
Simões broke into the first team last season, playing 18 matches and contributing one goal and one assist in the club’s historic season, which saw the Lions lift the Portuguese League and Cup trophies in the same season for the first time in 23 years.
Speaking to Sporting TV, Simões admitted he is overjoyed. “It reminds me of when I was a U-14 player dreaming of reaching the first team. Renewing my contract with this club is an incredibly strong feeling and a big responsibility at the same time. I’m very happy and I’ll keep working hard.
The young midfielder added that he’s focused on winning more silverware: “Now it’s about continuing to win titles, win matches, and show what I can do. We all know Sporting is a massive club with a great history. That’s why we always have to aim for more.”
