The car boot sale for December was called off, Jenny’s team ready in place to arrive at Ferragudo’s firmly closed streets for the EU Cross-Country Championship!
As it so happens, time was spent in negotiating a few bars with a ‘Ferragudian’ member doing an account-take of the unsterisilised cats in the popular square.
“They want to get involved in the cat-trapping.” Time well spent after all!
Alvor also has a problem. Again, one of the association’s members has asked Jenny to assist with advice on TNR. A globally used acronym for ‘Trap, Neuter & Return’. A popular method in an ever-increasing feral feline problem.
“Jean Marie and her team were eager to learn about TNR. They have a disused construction site which is now the main attraction for increasingly unwanted cats.” The vet involved is offering very good rates for the sterilisation.
SNiP, as Association for Protection of Animals in Algarve (APAA) like to call their spaying and neutering programme, is up-to-its-eyes in cat colonies. “As soon as we seem to have one area under control, another pops up.”
But cats are not APAA’s only concern. Abandoned dogs take a lot of time and effort.
‘Amigo’ is one such canine. Turning up in a back yard in a holidaymakers’ home, stressed and highly nervous, the animal had barely come to terms with the couple who then had to return to their home in France. Gail, our dog behaviourist, and dog-lover Lianne had made every effort to get the poor animal’s trust.
“Finally, we managed to persuade him into a car and take him to a kennel, where we had hoped he would gradually become more confident with humans.” Jenny shakes her head. “Sadly his traumas must be deeply buried. Lianne is willing to take him on with her small private animal set-up, but time is against us.”
Luckily, public donations for Amigo’s fees meant APAA could keep him at the kennels until he can be moved to Lianne’s. “This won’t happen until end of February.” Lianne, with the help of APAA, will build him a special kennel so that he can be integrated gradually with her own dogs.
‘Amigo‘ donations are gratefully received securing his future well-being. “We want to make this work for him.”
Happy New Year!
