Anything goes – ‘Pop-Up’ opportunities!

APAA's Pop-Ups have been thriving, becoming the main attraction at the centre of a small community

On a hot September morning, O Tasco, in Senhora do Verde, near Portimão, is heaving and the staff are busy, buying. APAA’s famous ‘Pop-Up’ duo are making hay whilst the sun shines.

APAA president Jenny Clarke has had her hands full. “It feels as if we’ve put a month in one week. Or is it a year?” Anita Wight has hauled out as much as she can for the first popular shopping venue of the season.

The Association for Protection of Animals Algarve’s Pop-Ups have been thriving, becoming the main attraction at the centre of a small community. New and familiar faces feast their eyes on new ‘opportunities’, as Anita calls her stock. Beautiful handmade jewellery, sumptuous or simple. “There is something for everyone. Sometimes we wonder – luckily, tastes are so different.” Books, kitchen goodies, new frames for family photographs…

We’re seeing a lot of new faces at our ‘Pop-Ups’ and events. New members too. Word is surely getting around.

We had a good meeting last week with the Portugal Charity Network at the Kit & Caboodle store in Alcantarilha. They charge for the coffee/tea and cake, but then donate the proceedings to the charity of their choice.

Anita has been telling attendees about the ‘Legacy for Pets’ programme, a wonderful plan you can arrange in advance to ensure your pets are being cared for should your health fail or you die.

Our recent encounter with ‘Amigo’, the abandoned dog, continues. Jenny received a video from Lianne who has been hand-feeding ‘Amigo’ for a couple of weeks, trying to calm him and gain trust. We don’t think he’s ever had proper contact with humans, other than the worst kind. Everyone involved with Amigo’s rescue and rehabilitation has taken the young fellow to heart.
