In the blink of an eye …

Several cats still looking for a loving home

APAA’s Jenny (president) and Jackie (treasurer) have completed their morning session at the cat sanctuary, once Zélia’s home (Editor’s note: Volunteer and ‘Cat Woman’ Zélia Santos passed away last year). “Most of the 30-something cats have been re-homed, and we have to thank all of the people who took one of her ‘specials’; cats who would otherwise not find a home.”

The Association for Protection of Animals Algarve has Facebook entries and the editor, Lisa, has been busy with all sorts of re-homing projects, nearly always of the feline variety.

Jenny warns: “Despite saying ‘no more’, I too fall into the hole of collecting yet another unfortunate who needs a home. But not just any cat…” They have to fit in with the current status-quo.

This is a problem a lot of new feline friendly humans find to their cost. The new furry friend has to fit in with the animals already established and the pecking order therein. “Some cats are easy-peasy; just plonk the new arrival in with the gang and they get on with it. Others? Well, that is a different story of segregation and playing the waiting game.” Patience and love usually pays dividends.

Jet, male, six years old

Cats still waiting for a home? All six years old and male are ‘Marble’ and ‘Pedro’, male, and ‘Jet’, female. They are still all listed on Facebook. Also check out a little ‘Gerald’, cute and only 10 months old, looking for a forever home.

APAA’s Anita, the ‘Legacy’ Ambassador, has just lost her ‘Dixie’, an old-timer who was abandoned and given a long, loving home. “Dixie was a favourite,” Anita explains. “Despite all the problems, Dixie soldiered on. Finally collapsed over the weekend. The Portimão Veterinary Hospital did all they could, but she had long-term illnesses finally catching up. Seems one minute they are with us, and then gone.”

Jenny nods in agreement: “It’s the memories of their coming to you, how you fight for their survival, the love they give in return.” Our commiserations.

APAA charity shops in Alvor and Silves have found a new helper, a student, to assist during the summer months. But anyone else wanting to help out, please bear us in mind. “We always welcome friends to help us out!”

Car boot sales and Pop-Up shops are suspended until autumn, but you can always get your homemade jams, chutneys and preserves at the charity shops. Not forgetting Jackie’s cookies.

  • Silves, Rua Elias Garcia 20: Mon-Fri, 10am-2pm (Sat, 1pm)

Finally, a thank you to all the members who helped with our accountant problem. We now have a new lady helping us out. A big sigh of relief. Also, we have the luncheon events’ menus under Jackie’s watchful eye, not our waistlines!

APAA needs new members – thinking of joining? Go for it!
