APAA luncheon events serve to raise much-needed money for animal welfare
Jackie and Jenny ‘do’ and managing to keep cool in the midday July heat. The treasurer and president of Association for Protection of Animals Algarve (APAA) rolled up their sleeves for their monthly special lunch.
Twelve ladies enjoying a chatty, interesting fact-finding yet relaxing ladies’ lunch. A welcoming, informal atmosphere, assisted by a balmy breeze in the countryside. Pleasantly spending time meeting new faces and sometimes, unexpectedly, old friends or acquaintances, sitting, shaded by several large umbrellas.
Anita, the ‘Legacy for Pets’ ambassador, talks to several about the ARA ‘Plan for Pets’ whilst others are making introductions, generously punctured by Jenny’s supply of cold, refreshing drinks. Some of the ‘gals’ have come from as far as Tunes. Others South Africa, via Lagos. Old-timers and new settlers. Some are members, others not.
The only difference is the cost of the lunch! Jackie’s menus are always widely varied and diverse; both she and Jenny have rich exotic tastebuds along with calming sultry themes. The one common fact is that whatever money is raised will be for the ongoing SNiP (spaying and neutering campaign) and the help of abandoned animals, along with shelters and associations who need help with their tireless ongoing charity work, here in the Algarve and further afield.
‘Here to Help’ is APAA’s motto, and indeed, their luncheon events serve to raise the much-needed money. “We do enjoy the lunches because it is a chance to meet the members first-hand and find out if we are going in the right direction. Picking up new members and interest along the way.”
Jenny also helps with providing some of the side dishes for the events. “We do try and keep the food interesting and enjoyable. A real mix-and-match challenge. We have to cater for all tastes and desires!” There are no ‘you must sit where you are put’ rules. Your table is chosen by the number 1 or 2 selected from a hat. There is a subtle change before ‘puds’ with ladies having a certain-coloured napkin changing tables. Glasses and other paraphernalia following or not!
Conversations are wide and varied. Pets are not always the main concern; some members do not have any, indeed, they love them but are unable for one reason or another to home one presently. Open for discussion.
For the ladies, it will have been an interesting lunch where they feel they have contributed to APAA’s deep needy pocket. Thank you! Homemade preserves, jams, chutneys and cookies, earrings and books also on sale.
‘Pop-Ups’ and car-boots closed for summer, but why not visit APAA’s charity shops at Dunas do Alvor or in Silves? For more information, check our Classifieds section.
