Monte Rei Golf & Country Club will host a charity golf tournament on April 11 to help grant wishes for children with serious illnesses, marking the 46th global anniversary of Make-A-Wish.
The eastern Algarve resort has teamed up with Make-A-Wish Portugal to organise the ‘Golf-For-Wishes’ event as part of World Wish Month, which celebrates the foundation’s annual anniversary. The initiative is open to both golfers and non-golfers, with all proceeds going towards fulfilling life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.
Founded in 1980 and recognised by the United Nations, Make-A-Wish has granted more than 650,000 wishes in nearly 50 countries and territories, thanks to the support of donors, partners and more than 32,000 volunteers worldwide. In Portugal, the organisation has been active since 2007, granting over 2,300 wishes nationwide. Around 300 wishes are currently still waiting to be fulfilled.
The tournament will be played in a fourball betterball pairs format over 18 holes on Monte Rei’s North Course, designed by 18-time Major winner Jack Nicklaus. Widely regarded as one of the Algarve’s top golf courses, it will temporarily close after the event for a six-month improvement programme.
Entry costs €245 per player, with the full registration fee donated to Make-A-Wish Portugal. Organisers aim to raise enough funds to grant 10 wishes. The fee includes access to the driving range, buggy use, a three-course lunch, prize ceremony and charity auction.
Non-golfers can take part for €65, which includes a two-hour introductory golf lesson and lunch. Sponsorship packages are also available, including hole sponsorships and backing for “nearest-the-pin” and “longest drive” competitions.
“Partnerships like this remind us that a wish is never just a moment – it is a turning point in a child’s life and their family’s life. When a community comes together, as Monte Rei is doing through Golf-for-Wishes, we are not just raising funds, we are generating hope. Each wish granted brings strength, joy and renewed confidence during some of the most challenging moments in a child’s life,” said Margarida Galvão, CEO of Make-A-Wish Portugal.
Nuno Sepúlveda, Co-CEO of Details, the management company behind Monte Rei, added: “Golf has a unique way of bringing people together and creating connections that go far beyond the game. It was in that spirit that we partnered with Make-A-Wish Portugal, transforming one of our courses into a stage for solidarity and hope.
“This event will generate real impact in the lives of these children and their families, helping to grant wishes and make a difference. We hope the goals are fully achieved, paving the way for many future editions. After all, golf has a role that goes beyond sport: it can unite communities and create lasting positive impact.”
Monte Rei is managed by Details, a platform of Arrow Global Portugal overseeing a portfolio that includes 23 hotels, 12 golf courses, a sports centre, an equestrian centre and several restaurant units across the country.
