Because they cannot speak, we will never truly know what some animals experienced before reaching us — only the marks those experiences leave behind. This simple but powerful truth applies perfectly to both Freddy and Batista. Their stories are different, but each one is a quiet reminder of resilience, kindness, and the life-changing power of giving an animal a second chance.
Freddy has already been through more than any gentle soul should. He originally lived in a colony on the other side of the Algarve, in Vila Real de Santo António. Soft-natured and affectionate, Freddy was never a typical colony cat. It soon became clear that life on the streets was not for him, and he was rescued and adopted by an elderly lady in Lagos, where he finally experienced the comfort of a real home.
Sadly, when his adopter became ill and could no longer care for him, Freddy’s world was turned upside down once again. He was entrusted to Cadela Carlota, where he has since captured the hearts of everyone he meets. Friendly, sociable, and incredibly loving, Freddy has shown nothing but gratitude and affection.
Now aged around four to five years old and FIV positive, he is once again searching for a home — this time, forever. Whoever opens their heart to Freddy will gain a loyal companion with endless love to give.
Batista, around three years old, is also looking for a family who can offer him safety, patience, and understanding. Rescued from the streets by the Lagos Kennel, his past remains a mystery, but the fears he carries speak volumes. Shy and cautious, Batista is slowly learning that the world does not have to be frightening.
Currently in a foster home with one of our volunteers, Batista has begun to make gentle but steady progress. He trusts his foster carer completely and rarely leaves her side. Inside the home, he is learning what comfort and routine feel like. Outside, however, cars, loud noises, and strangers are still overwhelming. Other dogs give him confidence and reassurance, and having a calm canine companion would greatly help him continue to grow.
