Wine Talk – Have you ever had a salty wine?

What does that even mean? No, we’re not talking about sodium content. Salty - or more formally, saline - is a flavor profile with notes of sea spray or oyster shell, and is often a sign of a coastal terroir.

Portugal, with its extensive coastline and nearby vineyards in regions like the Algarve, Bairrada, Lisboa, Minho, and the Azores, produces a variety of saline wines.

A great local example from the Algarve is the Uca Violinista Rosé from the Arvad team. The Uca vineyards are located in Alvor, along the Ria de Alvor. This tidal estuary influences soils and mineral deposits and creates a cool, humid climate that preserves acidity in the grapes, all of which contribute to saline flavors in the wine.

In this case, the rosé is a blend of Touriga Nacional, Syrah, and Aragonez, with aromas of berries and tropical fruit, but with a distinct salinity from the terroir. This wine was fermented in stainless steel to maintain fresh flavors and aged on the fine lees for five months, adding to its already savory, umami-like quality.

With low alcohol (12% ABV), this rosé is easy to enjoy and may give you a fresh perspective on the diversity of wines and terroirs within the Algarve.

Find the Uca Violinista Rosé 2024 at Intermarché for €8.49.
