There are many examples in local markets, but here are two suggestions for two very different styles of Algarve reds:
Quinta da Penina Grande Reserva 2019. This wine is 100% Petit Verdot harvested from vineyards near Portimão. This wine aged for six months in used French oak barrels and has further aged over five years in the bottle. It is an elegant garnet color with earthy flavors, notes of cranberries, plums, herbs, and well-integrated tannins. On the rustic side initially, but after opening up, the smoky and fruit character of this tinto comes through. Enjoy with smoked cheeses, chorizo, a traditional feijoada (bean stew) or a classic burger.
Another option is the Quinta da Malaca Castelão 2023. Castelão thrives in sandy soils and warm climates – like those in the well-known Castelão vineyards of Setúbal – but also in the sandy soils of Quinta da Malaca. Part of the lot aged in French oak, adding structure and complexity to the blend, while maintaining the wine’s fresh fruit character. Expect aromas of blackberries, cherries and violets and balanced flavors and tannins on the palate. Enjoy with braised meat, roasted poultry, or a deeply flavored vegetarian dish.
