Searches taking place in context of Martim Moniz attacks
Portugal’s PSP police are carrying out searches this morning in Lisbon, Loures, Sintra, Amadora and Odemira, in the context of attacks that have been occurring in the Martim Moniz/ Rua do Benformoso, in the capital.
In a statement, the Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the PSP said it was carrying out house and non-house searches in the municipalities of Lisbon (Rua do Benformoso), Loures, Sintra, Amadora and Odemira (Beja), as part of an investigation into crimes of possession of prohibited weapons and offences against physical integrity.
“The material objective is to recover and seize weapons used in the commission of crime, as well as all other instruments without a defined purpose that could be used as weapons of aggression,” said the PSP in a statement, without giving details or the date of the attacks, which have been repeated, particularly this year.
One of the most ‘high profile’ came in January when rival factions of Hindustani citizens engaged in violence in broad daylight. It transpired that the incident was sparked by ‘political differences’ and was something of a power struggle between two groups.
Since then, and previously, the Martim Moniz/ Rua do Benformoso areas have been marked by rising incidents of crime and sexual violence.
Today’s operation is thus focused on getting arms out of the hands of people who should not have them.
